Embracing Divine Opportunities

When the Spirit Calls Us to Act

Even though I run my own business, I keep my nursing license current and occasionally pick up shifts through agency work. Nursing is a profession full of unpredictability—each day brings new challenges and encounters. Sometimes, those moments are deeply spiritual, such as being present at someone’s end of life.

During one of my shifts, I felt a strong prompting from the Spirit to pray with a particular patient. I was guided to ask if they had made their peace with the Lord and sought His forgiveness—a conversation we had touched on before through discussions about Jesus. At that moment, I realized I needed to pause my routine and respond to this divine nudge.

The word “opportunity” came clearly to me. It resonated deeply, especially since I’ve been teaching a series on recognizing opportunities in my Sunday School class (you can find the free shorter version lesson linked below). Opportunities to share faith and live for the Lord surround us every day, but often, we miss them because we’re caught up in our own expectations or distracted by life’s busyness.

We must remain alert and vigilant, understanding that whatever is happening right now has been allowed by God for a purpose. Instead of resisting or overlooking these moments, we should embrace them fully—as chances to live out our faith and share the gospel using the unique gifts and talents He has given us.

When you reflect on your own Christian walk, you might recall times when the Holy Spirit spoke clearly to you. The key question is, did you embrace those opportunities, or did they pass by unnoticed?

Stay open, stay attentive, and be ready to act when the Spirit moves. Opportunities to make a difference are all around us.
