Stop Just Showing Up

At the beginning of every year, I revisit my mission statement for every area of my life. This year, I was intentional about choosing a specific scripture to anchor my plans. There was nothing “pretty” about the process—just me, a dry-erase board, and a marker.

The verse I chose was Romans 12:11“Not slothful in business; fervent in spirit; serving the Lord.”

The Trap of Complacency

I’m sure I’m not the only one who has started a season strong, only to eventually become slack. Life happens. Distractions creep in and get the best of us, pulling us away from the journey we know we are meant to be on. Before we realize it, complacency and indifference begin to govern our lives—whether at work, in our homes, or in our daily routines.

If you find yourself there, it is time to take a long look at your life and ask:

Whatever your answer, consider this: Is your current effort a reflection of the God you serve?

Back to the Source

This scripture forced me to reevaluate my relationship with the Lord. When we neglect our time with Him, we inevitably run dry.

To be “fervent in spirit” means to be passionate about serving the Lord. When we put Him first, He provides us with a new perspective and the endurance to do all things well.

If you have become slack in any area of your life, you may have lost your “boil” for the Lord. If that is the case, I encourage you to repent, surrender it to Jesus, and pick up your cross. Let’s get back to doing what we know to do—and doing it to the best of our ability.

Stop just showing up. Start showing up with purpose and passion.
