Beyond the Busybodies:

A Faith-Driven Guide to Workplace Drama

We have all been there. You show up ready to work, but find yourself surrounded by people who do not want to do their jobs. Instead, they cause mischief, spread gossip, and see what they can get away with.

The Bible actually describes this behavior as walking “disorderly.” This simply means walking out of alignment with established instructions.

“For we hear that there are some who walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.”2 Thessalonians 3:11

It is incredibly difficult to stay aligned and focused when you are trapped in a toxic work environment. Idle hands create a non-productive atmosphere, draining positive energy from a business.

While it would be nice if everyone simply tended to their own business, we live in a world where we inevitably run into busybodies.

Here are three powerful tips to help you stay engaged, productive, and aligned with your assignments.

1. Master Your Own Assignment

Learn every detail of your job description. Focus entirely on completing the tasks directly in front of you. No matter what your coworkers are doing—or failing to do—your primary responsibility is your own workload. Keep your head down and let your personal productivity speak for itself.

2. Guard Your Ears and Withdraw

Do not get caught up in the “he-said, she-said” office drama. When the gossip starts, physically and mentally withdraw yourself from the conversation. Will people talk about you because you don’t join in? Possibly. But you are there to build a career, not to entertain negativity.

3. Never Stoop to Their Level

Always choose kindness. Maintain your personal integrity regardless of the disorderly conduct happening around you. You are the bigger person. This is your opportunity to represent who God called you to be: honest, professional, and full of grace.

The Bottom Line

You cannot control how other people behave, but you have total control over how you respond. Put these tips into practice this week and watch how your work life changes for the better.
