Guarding Your Heart: Overcoming the Trap of Spiritual Independence

For the past few weeks, I have been teaching a series on pride, and it has truly been an eye-opener—even for me. These lessons forced me to look deep within myself. It amazes me how easily pride can creep into our hearts completely unnoticed until we look back and finally see it for what it is. Praise the Lord for the Holy Ghost, who brings all things to our remembrance!
I always say that every Bible study and Sunday school lesson is meant to bring awareness to what I need to change to live fully for Christ. In this specific lesson, one thing completely caught my attention: the dangerous trap of becoming spiritually independent believing we no longer need God’s grace or direction.
Looking back at my own life, I can see moments where I fell into this exact trap. I acted spiritually independent, thinking I had figured everything out. And every single time, I messed it up.
The Danger of the “S.I.” Attitude
It takes constant awareness and genuine humility to keep seeking God. Too often, when we are desperate for a breakthrough, we call upon the Lord. Because He is completely faithful, He answers us. But once we receive the blessing, a dangerous “Spiritual Independence” (S.I.) attitude can set in.
When we develop an S.I. attitude, we:
- Forget how we got to where we are in the first place.
- Stop asking for guidance and start making costly mistakes.
- Feel overwhelmed and exhausted because life suddenly feels too hard to handle alone.
If we would just choose to stay humble, we would have the strength and grace to jump over every hurdle that comes our way.
3 Ways to Defeat Pride and Stay Humble
To keep pride from taking over your life, focus on these three daily spiritual disciplines:
- Pray for guidance: Actively ask the Holy Spirit to direct your steps and show you the way.
- Stay in the Word: Read God’s Word daily to keep your mind aligned with His truth.
- Build your circle: Surround yourself with positive-minded, faithful Christians who are running the same race toward Christ.
