What It Actually Takes to Break the Cycle
A question was recently posed to me that stopped me in my tracks: “How did your life change?”
At the moment, my instinctive response was one word: determination.
But as I sat with that question all week, I started to wonder if my answer was truly sufficient. What actually made me decide that I didn’t want to live the life in which I was raised?
I was speaking to a group of people battling addiction. Although I have never personally struggled with substance abuse, I am all too familiar with its devastation. My upbringing was surrounded by addiction and severe mental illness. So, how did my story get altered? How did those generational cycles finally get broken?
As a life coach, I get a lot of questions. Questions that have even forced me to look inward. After much reflection, I realized that it’s pure determination and commitment to change.
But before determination can even kick in, you have to get tired and disgusted.
Real, lasting change begins when you become so weary of your current circumstances that you are motivated to act. For me, that exhaustion became the catalyst for my faith. God gave me a new direction and clear insight into the future. He had planned for me. I made a conscious decision to change.
I am reminded of Romans 12:2: “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” [1]
Transformation requires you to grow completely weary of the situation in front of you.
- Are you tired of the addiction you’ve been struggling with—the one that has made you physically ill and burned bridges with the people you love?
- Are you tired of the job that leaves you burned out, empty, and completely drained of interest?
- Are you tired of the broken relationship that is long overdue for an ending, but you just haven’t admitted it’s over?
- Are you tired of enabling a loved one while ignoring the resentment and bitterness growing inside your own heart?
Let’s be real. Life has a way of bringing us to a point of total surrender.
As a woman of faith, I know that God will always do His part. But remember, getting to the other side requires you to be so fed up that you want out bad enough to fight for it. It requires a resolve to rise up and move forward, no matter what.
When you have spent time feeling scared, miserable, and desperately unhappy, you reach a breaking point where you become willing to face the discomfort of change because nothing is worse than staying where you are.
